The halide rows are the ones to teach from the table. Chloride, bromide and iodide all use silver nitrate with nitric acid, and the answer is a colour on a gradient, white, cream, yellow, which pupils muddle unless they see the three together. The acid is there for a reason worth saying out loud, it removes carbonate ions that would otherwise give a white precipitate of their own.
Sulfate follows the same pattern with barium chloride and hydrochloric acid, and carbonate is the odd one out, a fizz you pass through limewater. Laid out as five rows the logic is visible, acid first to clear the carbonate, then the reagent that names the ion, and a class that has read it that way can reproduce it in the required practical rather than recite it.
