The graph above is a vehicle braking. The flat section is the thinking time, 13 metres per second held for 0.7 seconds, and the sloping section is the braking, down to rest at 3.5 seconds. Everything the exam asks is on the paper. The gradient of the slope is the deceleration, 13 divided by 2.8, and the area under the line is the distance, 9.1 metres of thinking distance and 18.2 metres of braking distance.
Pupils reach for the gradient when the question wants the area and the other way round, so having the shape in front of the class while you ask both questions is what fixes it. The scenario list covers the whole specification, constant velocity and acceleration, a skydiver whose curve flattens at terminal velocity, and a bouncing ball whose velocity goes negative, each drawn accurately rather than sketched.
